WEATHER FORECAST

UNSETTLED AND CLOUDY The following weather forecast was issued at noon by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, covering the southern district—Dunedin, Port Chalmers, Tapanui, Winton, Invercargill, Riverton, Oropuki, Bluif, Halfraoon Bay A rather deep westerly depression is moving on to the Dominion. Forecast : Strong north-west winds of gale t'orco at places, backing to southerlies. Weather unsettled and cloudy, with rain, and becoming cooler; seas rough. HOTTEST DAY OF YEAR. To-day was the hottest day of the year. A scorching nor’-wester prevailed from early morning, and though the sun beat down from tho outskirts of heavy cloud banks at noon, tbo temperature was 82deg, which was certain to improve in the early afternoon, thus surpassing the previous best maximum recording for 24 hours of 82.2 deg on December 12. Tho hottest temperature last year was 85deg on January 7. To-day’s heat was sultry and tiring, the 9 o’clock temperature of 75deg .being almost that of the maximum for "the whole of yesterday (76.5 deg). The minimum last night was 58dog. However, tho barometer was well back, falling at 29.4 in, three points under yesterday’s noon reading. About 1.20 this afternoon the weather was at its best, golden sunshine glaring from a clear sky. Shortly afterward dark clouds covered the sky, and at 2.30 a storm appeared imminent. Dp till that hour the maximum temperature for the day was 84.5 deg.
