Mr J. L. J. Wilson, who has been appointed assistant-director of _ the Workers’ Educational Association tutorial classes at Sydney University, left Auckland by the Monterey for Sydney to take up his new duties. Mr Wilson was formerly tutor-organiser of the Workers’ Educational Association in Dunedin.
Nurse Gwyneth Owen has been appointed to the position of nurse in the tuberculosis department at the Dunedin Hospital. The name of Shona Prisk, St. Dominic’s College, a candidate for the recent senior free place examination, was inadvertently omitted from the list of passes published a few days ago. Mosgiel residents tendered a welcome to Captain Jones and Mrs Jones, of the Salvation Army, the Rev. Mr Challenger presiding over a good attendance. Addresses of welcome were given by Mrs Bemie and Mr A. Jeffs. An enjoyable programme was supplied by Mr and Mrs J. M'Bryde, Misses Melrose, Owens, Matheson, and M'Gregor, and Mr L. B. Borrow. The secretary (Mr E. S. Wilson) reported to the meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Football Union last night that he had sent a letter to Sir James Hutchison congratulating him on the title which had been conferred on him in the New .Year honours. The president (Mr J. B. Wootton) said that Sir James had given very valuable service to the union for many years—as president for a term, as a committeeman, and as secretary for a lengthy period. He thought it was very gratifying to’ see one of the old members of their union so honoured by their late King._ The action of the secretary was confirmed. An Ashburton Press Association tele-
gram records the death of Mr Georg© Searight Hardy, son of the late Hon. C. A. C. Hardy, aged 62, who com-' manded the second reinforcements of the Mounted Rifles to Egypt. He was invalided home in 1916, and later assumed charge of the Marlborough recruiting district. He was president of the Rakaia branch of the R.S.A., and a member of many bodies in the Rakaia district. He was algo a member of the Ashburton Hospital Board.
Mr G. W. Reid was a passenger by the midday express, booked for Wellington. Mr A. C. Laing left for Wellington by the second express to-day. Mr F. J. Williams travelled by today’s second express, en route to Wellington. Members of the Wellington representative cricket team returned north today by the midday express.
Mr L. E. Carroll, who has been manager of the Grand Theatre for the past two years, has been appointed by Amalgamated Theatres Ltd. to a similar position in the new State Theatrd)_ Nelson. He was farewelled by friends when he left by the second express today to visit Auckland before taking up his new duties. Mr Carroll is succeeded locally by Mr D. Slyfield. Mrs G. Thompson (Wellington), Mr T. D. Page (Christchurch), Mr John Faulks (Pembroke), Mr B. C. HarrisRobson (Alexandra), and Mr A. I. M'Kinley (Lawrence) are guests at the City Hotel.
