TWO RECORDS BROKEN MISS MATHIESON'S IMPRESSIVE FORM Tiie Otago senior swimming championship carnival will be held the Municipal Baths on Wednesday night, but the first of the distance events were decided at the St. Clair Club hour at the Municipal Baths last night,_ fresh Otago records being established in the ladies’ 220yds free style championship and the men’s 440yds. Miss M. Mathieson registered a most impressive performance in retaining her 220yds ladies’ title, and although she was not seriously extended, she covered the distance in 2min 50sec, which was Isec better than the existing Otago record, put up-by Miss Kathleen Miller when she won the New Zealand ladies’ 220vds championship at Dunedin in 1928. “Miss Mathieson’s time was only 4sec outside of Miss Marie Farquliar’s New Zealand record, and fully extended, the Dunedin representative should go close to Miss Farquhar’s J. D. O’Driscoll retained his 440yds men’s title fairly comfortably, and his time of smin 34 4-ssec was 6 l-ssec better than his Otago senior record established last year, though S. W. Jarvis’s intermediate record stands at smm 40sec. O’Driscoll won so easily and swam so well that he should have little difficulty in improving on_ these figures very materially by the time the New Zealand championships are decided. E. Toase, who has not previously attempted distances over 100yds in championship competition, stayed the distance well and took second place. Mr W. A. Jenkins was the starter, Messrs S, Brown, F. J. Townsend, and A. Grelg were the timekeepers, and Messrs W. H. Matthews, D. Watson, and J. MTnggart the Judges. Results:— 440 YARDS OTAGO MEN’S FREE STYLE CHAMPIONSHIP. Toase was then in second place and also moving well, though not quite so freely as O’Driscoll. Kerr employed hack stroke all the way, Using the race as a good training effort for his back stroke championship on Wednesday night. O’Driscoll turned at the end of the sixth lap with 11yds to spare, his time for 200vds being 2min 22 2-ssec. Shanahan occupied third position another 6yds back. Pushing off into the ninth lap, O’Driscoll had increased his advantage to 15yds, but Toase was staying well, Shanahan being another 15ycls back. Tlie 300yds mark was left behind in Smin 42sec and the 400 in Smin 4sec, O’Driscoll finishing full of dash 25yds ahead of Toase, Shanahan being nearly 30yds back third. Only starters. Miss Mathieson went into the lead from the start find though Miss Duncan could not stay the pace set by Miss Mathieson, she nevertheless swam a very plucky race. Miss Mathieson turned at the end of the first lap in 21sec, and' with two laps covered in 45sec she led by 15yds, having further increased the gap at the 100yds mark, left behind in 2min 32 3-ssec. Miss Mathieson drew further away over the next 100yds, and left 200yds behind in 2min 32 3-ssec, finishing with a sprint to win by 35yds. Time, 2min SOsec—an Otago record.
