BROADSIDING

WESTERN SPRINGS STADIUM [Pkr United Pjixss Association.] AUCKLAND. January 26. Rain affected the attendance at the cinder track race meeting at Western Springs Stadium last night. The ,track, however, was unaffected, and, although a trifle bumpy, some fine riding was seen. The principal event on the programme, the International Points Race, was won by B. Harrison (England), ■with a total of seven points. S. Greatrex (England) and C. Goldberg (a local rider) tied for second place with six points each, and Lisman (America) was fourth with five points. Goldberg rode _ consistently well throughout the evening, his best lap performance being .18 3-ssec.

Harrison, won the special. event for .the four fastest riders of the night, and A. Mattson (the New Zealand champion) defeated Greatrex in a special Tnatch race

At the close of the nyjht’s racing a silence of two minutes was observed as of respect to the memory cf iKing George V.

MONICA PARK MEETING CHRISTCHURCH, Januarv 26. ■ The broadsiding meeting at Manica Park last night produced some of fhc most oxciting races of the season. The visitors were W. Clibbett (England) R. Case (Australia), and several members of Putt Mossman’s motor cycle rodeo. Case and Clibbett ran a dead-heat in one race, and in another Case won by one-fifth of a second. J. Hobson was the most prominent local rider. Mossman, assisted by Dessie Grant and Pee Wee Cullum. did several motor cycle stunts. 'Following are the chief results: — _ International Points Race (one mile). First heat: Case and Clibbett (equal) 1. Hobson 3. ' Time, Imin 20 3-ssec. Second heat: Hobson 1. Time, Imin 22 2-ssec. The other starters, R. Grant (U.S.A.) and E. Schnitzel- (U.S.A.), had machine trouble. Third heat: Case 1, Clibbett 2, Grant 3. Time, Imin 20 2-ssec. Fred Sharman Handicap (one mile). —Case 1, W. Ferguson 2, J. Roscoe 3. Time, Imin 22 4-ssec. INTERESTING YACHTING RAGE TO SROAD BAY A consistent performer, Shadow, won the annual race for the Nees Memorial Cup on Saturday afternoon over a course froih a point opposite the boat harbour to Broad Bay. This yachting event, the most popular on the calendar for the season, was held under admirable conditions, a spanking north-east breeze offering every opportunity for a display of skilful seamanship by the competitors. Entries were considerably in excess of those of last year, 20 boats participating, though the handling of the majority of them detracted from competitive interest. Betty, Eileen, Starlight, and Lark were the only yachts to secure the advantage of a good start, most of the other boats crossing the line seconds after their appointed times. The fleet was well scattered when Dawn, ttbe scratch boat, began her journey at 3.25 p.m.. the leading yachts being off Johnson’s Point. Twelve boats rounded the pile at Macandrew Bav almost simultaneously, and then ensued a tussle to take the lead for the last stage of the race. There was a bunch of. about 14 yachts by the time Grassy Point was reached, and they turned the pile within a minute of each other. It was at that stage that Shadow impressed as a likely Winner, and, she took the lead with the others closely in her wake to cross- the finishing line a minute ahead of Dawn. It was quite an interesting conclusion to a fair race. MOTOR BOAT RACE. A cruising race for motor boats from the channel opposite the boat harbour to Broad Bay was also held. The six competitors crossed the line within 30 seconds of each other, but the different speeds resulted in a difference of about 17 minutes in the actual finishing times. The handicapping brought the first three boats within a minute and a-half of each other, Nell winning from Rover by a margin of only 17 seconds. The competitors were: — Nell (13min), 4h llmin 6sec ... 1 Rover (22min), 4h llmin 23sec ... 2 Jewel (13min), 4h 12min 46scc ... 3 i Stella (scr), 4h I6min 31sec; Kidson (3min), 4h 17min 40sec; Marewa (3min), 4h 14miii 4sec. VAUXHALL MODEL YACHTS. In a full sail breeze and beautiful sunshine a fleet of _ the Vauxhall A class model yachts sailed the fourteenth club race on Saturday afternoon: The wind was from the north-east, and was very steady,_ enabling the models to make good time over the course. Results:— —-A Class.— J. Smith’s Maiona ,1 A. Mitchell’s Restless ... ■ 2 W. Iles’s Onaway 3 ■
