AMATEUR ATHLETICS

SOUTHLAND TRACK AND FIELD TITLES SUCCESS OF DUNEDIN CONTINGENT The seventh annual Southland athletic championships held in i conjunction with the cycling championships at Rugby Park, Invercargill, on Saturday, proved to be a most successful and enjoyable fixture. The weather was perfect, bright sunshine proving very acceptable to the competitors. A though a slight breeze was in evidence later in the afternoon it did not seriously affect performances. The general standard was good, more so in the track events, and gave promise of better performances at the Otago championships. The Otago contingent had a most successful meeting, winning 18 of theJW track and field titles Six of these competitors won doubles —a. L. iapiey 100yds and ,220yds championships J. G. Leckie, discus and hammer; W. a. Pettet, 220yds, 440yds hurdles; W. A. C. Pullar, one mile, three miles; K. O. Johnson, pole vault and hop, step, and jump; and J. H. Ramsay, 120 yd hurdles .and broad jump The most outstanding - events-, of -.•the, ntternoon were the mile championship and 440 yd. championship. W. A. C. PULLAR. In the former event Pullar and P. 6 M'Lauchlan, the promising 19-year-old Southlander, from whom so much is confidently expected staged a‘great contest all the way, M'Lauchlan pushing Pullar to do his very best Actually M'Lauchlan was on terms with 20yds to go, but Pullar managed to gam a feet advantage in the fast time of 4mm 26sec. While Pullar was responsible for a great performance, too much credit cannot be given, M'Lauchlan. N. J. TYRIE. In the 440yds event Price was slower over the earlier stages than usual, but unloosed a good spurt to draw level 150yds from the tape. From here Price and Tyrie staged a thrilling contest neither having any advantage until right on the tape, when Tyne managed to draw out to win by inches m the good time of 51scc. B. TAPLEY. Tapley had no serious opposition in the 100yds, but in the 220yds event he ■ was given a real test by Price, who was responsible for a sterling performance after, being slow into his stride. Me made up ground rapidly in the straight, and just failed to reach Tapley by a *°ln the field events the standard was only fair, the up-hill run in the broad and hop, step, and jump events not helping the competitors. J. M. Hamsay’s effort of 20ft 2 Jin was a good performance in the long jump, and it is a pity that he will not be in Dunedin for the Otago championships, as he would certainly make the event more interesting. ~ n , R. 0. Johnson won the Otago Centre’s gold medal for most points in championship track and field events, and, as usual, added considerably to the success of the meeting by giving good performances in several events. He was first ih the pole vault, first in the hop, step, and jump, second in the broad jump, and third in the discus, a total of 9 points, J, H. Ramsay being runner up with S points. . The one-mile and three mile cycle championships were won comfortably by C. W. Robinson. Frame, the past champion; being unable to compete owing to illness. ' The control of the meeting left nothing to be desired, and credit must be given to’ the following officials for the prompt despatch of a lengthy programme Referee, Mr G. L.
