CAN INDIANAPOLIS WIN? It is a long time since so much interest has been taken m a .Dunedin Trotting Cup as is the case this jear. The inclusion of the dual. New Zealand Cup winner, Indianapolis, is musing unusual interest in the ra^ e - ~ ° doubts his ability to concede the 84yds start he is asked to give, but whetbei he can get through the held on a hvefurlong track is creating a lot ot discussion. It is reported tlmt indianapolis will be driven by D. C. Watts and Teijipest by J. Fraser, jun. These two reinsmeu are recognised as being well in the fust flight of drivers in the Dominion. At Addington last November this bracketed pair finished first and second on two occasions, and it is quite on the cards that they will do so again next Thursday. The presence of Indianapolis in the Cup is ,8° in .S to prove a strong drawing card to this week’s meeting, and Ins attempt against the mile record to be made on Saturday afternoon will be watched with great interest. A PROMISING ’CHASER. Direct Hit, the dam of Shillelagh Wood winner of the Orawia Steeplechase at Invercargill on Saturday, is by Fleethau from Lucky Shot, by Calibre from the Seaton Delaval mare Tapuwhi, and was bred by the late Mr John Grigg at Longbeach. Though now owned by Mr M. Hanley, Shillelagh Wood was bred by Mr Carnegie Gardner, president -of the . Clifden Club. Shillelagh Wood is a very fine stamp of a mare, and is credited with running “about” two miles over country in 3min 49 3-ssec. Whether the distance is right or not. other races of the same distance have been started at the same place, and Shillelagh Wood’s time was about Bsec faster than the previous best. She is a perfect fencer, and at several of the obstacles outjumped Black Banner. Mr M. Hanley, owner of Shillelagh Wood, raced another good steeplechaser in Honest Tom, and when that horse wpn the Beaufort Steeplechase in 1910 he was the first horse in the Dominion to run two and a-half miles over country in smin. Shillelagh W’ood is a well-bred mare on both sides of her pedigree, and one- of the best young cross-country horses seen out for some seasons. She is trained in the South Hillend district, where all horses have to jump, and qualified last season with the Birchwood hounds. JOTTINGS. Nominations for the Dunedin Cup Meeting close to-morrow, Tuesday, at 5 o’clock. The first race at Forbury Park on Thursday is timed to start at 12.30. Mala, winner of the Wellington Stakes, is to be now put aside and his next appearance will be at Randwick in the spring. Superex has failed of late to race up to his earlier efforts, and his two displays at Trentham were not very encouraging in view of his later prospects.
