DANZIG DISPUTE
CAPTAIN EDEN'S ENERGY CONFLICTING OPINIONS Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, January 25. “ Another triumph for Captain Eden,” says the ‘ News-Chronicle,’ in discussing the settlement of the Danzig dispute. “ Dangerous Captain Eden,” says the ‘ Daily Mail,’ which every day condemns his attitude with regard to the dispute between Italy and Abyssinia. The ‘ Daily Mail ’ expresses the opinion that Captain Eden is leading Britain into a conflict in the Mediterranean. The ‘ News-Chronicle,’ on the contrary, answers: “ There could be no better reply to the parrot talk about •‘dangerous Captain Eden.’ Twice ho has played a bold part in saving the threatened peace of Europe. Now he has done it a third time. Captain Eden has firmly and boldly faced the Danzig Nazis, resulting in the Danzig question ceasing to exist as a threat to Europe’s peace.” CAPTAIN EDEN'S WORK GENERAL CONGRATULATIONS, (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, January 25. (Received January 27, at noon.) Captain Eden arrived in London tonight from Geneva, where the Council last night concluded its session with the adoption of two reports oil the Danzig question and the dispute between Russia and Uruguay. The newspapers print messages from their Geneva correspondents describing the feeling of optimism engendered by the successful settlement of these two difficult questions, which are regarded as a triumph for the League methods of peaceful discussion and persuasion. Congratulations generally are offered to Captain Eden for the part he played as rapporteur on the Danzig question, except in the ‘ Daily Mail ’ and the ‘ Daily Express,’ where for some days his participation in the League’s efforts to find a solution has been severely criticised. ‘ The Times ’ says: “ The new aceord over Danzig is due directly to Captain Eden’s tact and perseverance,” and replies directly to attacks in isolationist papers, as does also the ‘NewsChronicle ’ in a leading article commending the policy he has followed as rapporteur. The ‘ Daily Herald ’ draws from the incident the moral: “ AVhen the League acts firmly it is successful and becomes stronger for its success,” The ‘ Birmingham Post ’ is of the opinion that: “ Surrender-surrender is the only proper word of the Danzig Senate to the League pressure, and may prove to be an event of European importance.” It concludes that while it is too early to say whether this Danzig settlement is “a decisive battle,” it is not too early to hope for it.
