AUSTRALIAN ATHLETES

NATIONAL GAMES ADELAIDE, January 26. The opening ceremony at Adelaida Oval of the 1936 national games was a remarkable and moving scene. In a picturesque parade 500 athletes marched past before a crowd of 10,000. After the National Anthem had teen, sung, two minutes’ silence was observed in memory of King George. The crowd stood and cheered as 23, torch relay runners finished their long trek from Melbourne after covering 480 miles in 62 hours. The games flame was then ignited by a torch from Melbourne. While the Olympic flag was being unfurled the Olympic hymn was sung, and 1,000 pigeons, emblematical of the dove of peace, were released.
