NOTEB ON THE EVENTS [Special to the ‘ Star.’] Class Prevails. Red Sun was responsible for one of ■his characteristic finishing efforts to win the Wallaceville High-weight Handicap, for which Petrarch was preferred to him. Red Sun disputed last place with Umpire until the home turn, when he commenced to move up, hut was still a good way from the leaders, Tauman, Royal King, Royal Papa, and Petrarch, when the run home was entered upon. Inside the distance, however, he was taken to the outside, and responding in a determined manner, was going away crossing the line to win by half a length. Tauman and Royal Papa , had a close tussle for second money, the former hanging on for a head verdict. Grand Blow was next in front of . Petrarch, General Quex, and Umpire. The winner ’showed his class by mowing ,down the whole field in the last, furlong. He is booked to contest the Dunedin Cup next month. Tauman ran a solid race, while Royal Papa showed a marked improvement on his two previous displays. The favourite, Petrarch, looked likely at the distance, but could not carry on. A Crushing Defeat.

The Trentham Stakes attracted only four, three-year-olds, but interest was evinced in the race owing to the opportunity being given of deciding on the relative merits of Kinnoull and Heritage on a firm. track. There was never any doubt which of the two was preferred, by investors, Kinnoull carrying close on 2,000 tickets more than Heritage, who' had as many- followers as Lowenberg and Superex together. The quartet, despatched with the new six-strand barrier, got away in a line, but Kinnoull soon took up the leading position and led into the back stretch and round the far turn a length in front of Superex, with Lowenberg and Heritage abreast another length away. Kinnoull increased his lead slightly approaching the home turn, but at this stage Heritage made a fast forward move, and when the straight was reached he -was only a length behind Kinnoull, with Lowenberg and Superex commencing to fade out of the contest. Kinnoull entered, the home run in front of Heritage, but a little further on the latter was on terms, and when the distance was reached he had-Kinnoull in trouble. Only a short struggle was staged, and Heritage drew right away from nis rival, whose rider, realising his hopeless task, eased up on him and Heritage had over • three lengths to spare at the post. Lowenberg struggled home five lengths back,- with Superex, who was practically, pulled up down the running half a furlong in the rear. The result caused a sensation, but racegoers nevertheless gave the winner and his rider a rousing reception. This was the first occasion. when Heritage encountered a .firm' surface, and his form bore out his trainer’s opinion that his colt would show his real worth when he met his previous conquerors on top of the ground. There was no excuse for Kinnoull, except that a hard race m the Wellington Cup, his first for two months, had some effect on him. He was certainly decisively beaten, with very little effort being required from Heritage, who had the race in hand actually a furlong from home. Lowenberg was a beaten colt as soon as the straight was reached, and his form since the New Zealand Cup Meeting has served to emphasise how lucky he was to win the New Zealand Derby. Superex went well for about seven furlongs, and then suddenly dropped out of the tussle. The time, 2.4, was a record for' the track, the fastest pace being over the early'and middle stages. The first two furlongs took 25|, next half-mile 48L and last half-mile 49 A Dead Heat.

Laughing Lass was a staunch favourite for the Hopeful Stakes, but after leading on to the course proper and still being in charge at the distance, she commenced to weaken, and was beaten into fourth place. Karl was the first to head off Laughing Lass, and Gay. Chief and Deficit then came on .the scene on the outside, with Impersonator closely following on th"e rails. A thrilling struggle ensued, and a' dead heat was declared between Gay Chief and Deficit, with Karl a head away, and a similar margin to Laughing Lass. • Impersonator was just in behind the bunch, and Jovial Prince headed the remainder. It was a spectacular finish to a good race, and tthe verdict met with general approval. Both Gay Chief ahd Deficit executed telling finishing rims after giving the leaders an appreciable break at tlTe false rail. Karl undoubtedly lost first place by stopping in the last stride when be espied the six-strand barrier which is fixed above the finishing line, and which similarly scared several horses especially in the preliminaries. Impersonator ran another useful ‘race after being well back over the early stages. Never in Doubt.

Chief Ranger and Ben Braggie disputed favouritism in the Melrose Handicap but while the former was impressive, Ben Braggie did not take part in the final struggle. When the field had settled down. Chief Ranger had taken charge and was still in front entering the straight from Sansfoy, Colombo, Vinco, and Misurina, Chief Ranger had a useful advantage passing the distance from Vinco and Colombo, and the issue was left to this trio, who sorted themselves out from the remainder. Vinco finished solidly, but the leader was not seriously troubled to win by _ a length, with Colombo weakening into a ■ fair third place. There was a similar gap to Revival, 'who was followed by Blue Garter, Barley, Almond. Ben Braggie, and Misurina. Chief Ranger had the field in trouble practically throughout, and won decisively. Vinco did better on his earlier showings, but Colombo did not make the expected improvement after his race in the Douro Cup. Of the remainder, Blue Garter probably did the best,' a>, after getting away-’wcll, she drifted back to the rear and was not aghin in sight until well down the running, when she . finished fast into fifth plicO Narrow Margin.

Another great race was provided by the Summer Handicap, culminating in a close finish betwen Kona Bay, Spiral, and Passion Fruit. Great Star was

the first to show out from an excellent start, but after piloting the held to the six furlong post he was displaced by Rona Bay, who carried _ on from Great Star, Spiral, Argentic, Grand Jury, Passion Fruit, and Sunee. Rena Bay entered the straight a length in front of Spiral, with Argentic, Great Star, and Grand Jury handy. Rona Bay was tackled, by Spiral inside the distance, and Passion limit, Grand Jury, and Sunee also showed prominence. Spiral kept at Rona Bay, but the latter hung on tenaciously, and secured the verdict by a nose, with Passion Fruit a head away. .Grand Jury and Sunee were almost in line with Passion Fruit, and then came Senior, whose rider lost an iron at the start, and who was in the rear until the last furlong. ~, , . Rona Bay was responsible for a most creditable performance, and showed grim determination in a prolonged struggle with Spiral, who was actually in front a stride after the post. Rona Bay ran a sound race for ten furlongs in the Wellington Cup, and this accounted for the strong support accorded her. Silver Streak Again, The four places in the Thorndon Handicap were’ filled by South Island horses, after a brilliant performance on the part of Silver Streak, who got up to beat the Greymouth-trnmed Metal Bird in the last two strides. Ihe latter essayed to win from the early stages, and led past the half-mile from Knockout, Silver Streak, Sweet Agnes, Full Throttle, and Princess Doreen, the last horses being Fracas, Cheap Money, and After Money. Metal Bird was still going freely in front entering the straight from Silver Streak, hugging the rails, Knockout, Pladie, and Princess Doreen. Metal Bud looked the winner a hundred yards from the post, but Silver Streak then crept up on the inside of him, and in a sustained struggle the latter wore him down to beat him by a neck. Tunneller and Fracas joined in the issue nearing the post, and the former gamed third money a head away and a neck in front of Fracas. Then came Full Throttle, After Money, and Cheap Money. Silver Streak has had many game performances to his credit, hut this one was undoubtedly his best. Always recognised as, a sprinter, he ran out a smartly-run mile under the steadier or 911 Metal Bird showed the benetit of his first day’s race, and it was unlucky for his owner that he was up against such a formidable opponent as Silver Streak. Tunneller also unproved and was finishing very fast, while Fracas did well to get up into the finish after being several lengths away turning for home. Sweet Agnes failed to stay on. Another for Riccarton.

Invoice justified his favouritism for the City Handicap by winning after warding off a determined challenge by the Wellington Cup winner, Queen of Song. Diatomous led on to the course proper from Invoice, The Ark, Queen of Song, and Symcony. Invoice drew to the front inside the distance, and was then challenged by Queen of Song, who showed signs of getting his measure, but Invoice hung to his task and reached the line with a neck margin. Knockfin, who was well clear in last positipn at the false rail, put in great work in the run home to gain third place three lengths in front of Diatamous, The Ark, and Copyist. - Invoice has done well of late, and his win was very popular. He had to use up all of his resources to hold off Queen of. Song, who, in the face of her win over a mile and a-half, put up a creditable performance over a sprint course. Knockfin was the slowest to move off, and gave the leaders a big break when the course proper was reached. The finishing effort did not suggest that there was much wrong with her. Copyist and Bon Tray both failed to make any showings.

Led Throughout. Pukeko was selected as a good first choice for the Kelburn Handicap, and made a game attempt to win after being badly placed in the rear of the.field over the first half of the journey. The race was won . by Dcbham practically from barrier vise. He led early from Silver Jest and Whetuma, and at the home turn was clear of Contact, Master Reynard, Whetuma, Silver Jest, Windscreen, and Pukeko. Debham was still clear entering the straight from Contract, Whetuma, and Silver Jest, with Pukeko improving his position. Silver Jest was the first to challenge the leader, but could not make any impression, and then Pukeko forced his way through on the inside of Silver Jest. He finished resolutely, but suffered defeat by half a length. Silver Jest weakened into a fair third placing, and Contract anld Windsoreen were next. TAKAPUNA J.G. GAY BOSE WINS THE CUP The Takapuna Jockey Club’s Summer Meeting was opened at Ellerslie racecourse in fine weather. The track was in good, order. There was a fair attendance, and the totalisator handled £24,801 10s, against £23,003 10s on the first day last year, an increase of £1,498. Kurapae gained a surprise win in the Rangitoto Handicap to return a big dividend. The jockeys wore crepe arm bands in mourning for the late King. At a meeting of the Judicial Committee, M. J. M'Tigue, the driver of Real Burton in the Liverpool Handicap, was severely cautioned for undue use of the whip. There was also an inquiry into the running of Isabel Derby in the Liverpool Handicap, and it was decided to accept the explanation of the owner and driver. In this race the mare was pulled up by the driver, as he was afraid of her treading on a loose bandage on her foreleg. She had nearly fallen when she made a break in the early part of the race. HONEST MAID WINS AGAIN SHILLELAGH WOOD THE STEEPLECHASE Favoured with hot, still weather the Clifden Racing Club failed to draw more than a fair attendance to the annual race meeting which was held on the Invercargill course. With the exception of the two light harness events the fields were on the small side, but the racing was interesting. The course was very fast, and-Mr T. Marshall’s starting good. Though no first favourite won during the after-

noon, the totalisator handled £5,081 10s, as compared with £2,089 10s last year, when the meeting was held at Clifden. Detailed results;—

NOTES ON THE EVENTS

(By St. Clair.)

Western Song was sent out £7 better fancied than Smoko, with Henry Dawson a good third selection for the Lilburn Handicap. From a good start Henry Dawson and Smoko at once showed out, and after going two furlongs the former commenced to draw clear. Racing across the top Henry Dawson was two lengths clear of Bond and Smoko, and maintaining his advantage ran hotne a comfortable winner by two lengths from Bond, who beat Smoko half a length. King Willow and Bonny June were almost in line next.

John Desborough was made £56 10s better favourite than Antarctic Sun and £57 better than Vacation, for the Tuatapere Harness Handicap.

Frances Cole led Creep through the straight, but passing the mile post fell and brought down the favourite and Carillon Chimes, and interfered with several others. This left Bill Drusus and Cirrus in charge, and as they raced along the back this pair drew out six lengths clear of Vacation, Antarctic Sun, and Erin’s Star. They were still in charge turning for home, but once in line for the judge Vacation drew away to win by three lengths from Erin’s Star, who beat Cirrus by two lengths for second money. Bill Drusus and Antarctic Sun were next. .** • * Clara Bow was backed down to a short price for the Belmont Hack Handicap, carrying £77 10s more than Red Treasure, with Ballad nearly as well backed. Henry Dawson failed to jump our smartly, and Ada and Ballad led round the far turn and across the top from Red Treasure and the favourite. Ada was first into the straight from Red Treasure and Clara Bow, who got through on the rails. Ada stayed on to beat Red Treasure by a length and a-half, and Ballad was a similar distance away third, with Clara Bow close up fourth. « * • • Groat Shot was sent out £24 better favourite than Steeton for the Fowle Memorial Handicap, the latter being £3 10s better fancied than Honest Maid. Steeton again held up the start for several minutes Broken Rule led Great Shot through the straight, but at the mile post they were together, and they led the other pair to within two and a-half furlongs from home. Steeten then ran to the front and led into the straight from Island Linnet and Great Snot At the distance Honest Maid had Steeton’s measure and beat her home two lengths. Great Shot was four lengths away third, with Broken Rule beaten off. * * * * Black Banner was £99 10s better fancied than Shillelagh Wood for the Orawia Steeplechase, the latter being £1 better backed than Trisox. Shillelagh Wood at once drew out and led Black Banner for six furlongs then the latter joined Shillelagh Wood and the pair led Trisox by 10 lengths over the next six furlongs. The favourite and Shillelagh Wood were still together at the last fence, with Trisox three lengths away. The last named made a* strong run to the post but failed by a long head to reach Shillelagh Wood. Black Banner was two lengths away third. Red Terror fell at the second fence, and Jack a Dandy at the sod wall. . » « « * Amelita was made £44 better favourite than Bay Biddy for the Waiau Hack Handicap, the latter being £3l better fancied than Mayam. The favourite, M'Nab, and Bay Biddy raced abreast just clear of Wall Street and Ocean Singer for nearly half a mile. On the home turn both Amelita and M'Nab retired beaten, and Bay Biddy was in charge from Wall Street and Ocean Singer at the distance. The last named finished very fast and just

got up to beat Bay Biddy by a short neck with Wall Street only a head away third. Dazzling Eyes and Mayam were next. * * * • Autogo was made £3l 10s better favourite than John Desborough for the Alton Harness Trot, Lady Ita being a good third choice. Creep, Antarctic Star, and John Desborough began the best of the limit horses, and they led through the straight from Erin’s Star, who ihade up his handicap of 60yds very smartly. Going into, the back stretch Antarctic Star headed Creep, who shortly afterwards began to drift. After rounding the far turn Erin’s Star took charge and the favourite, who was twice checked racing along the back, moved up. Erin’s Star was first into the straight from Antarctic Star, John Desborough, and Autogo, these four racing in close order with Vacation three lengths away. John Desborough headed Erin’s Star at the distance and won by half a length. The judge placed Autogo second and Erin’s Star a head off third, hut from the Press stand it looked as if Autogo failed to get up hy a neck. Vacation was close up fourth and Loyalist next. All Humbug was made £l6B tetter favourite than Enwood for the Farewell Handicap, with Leading Boy nearly as well supported as Enwood. The favourite was at once taken to the front and led Enwood by two or three lengths into the straight. Enwood made a challenge at the distance, and while All Humbug’s rider was attempting to get his whip out Enwood got a neck in front. In the, last two or three strides the favourite responded well, but Enwood lasted long enough to win by a nose. Sailing Home was three lengths away third, and Leading. Boy a' poor fourth.
