The situation arising out of tli« miners’ claim fpr a wages increase took a more hopeful turn this evening following further discussions _ between the colliery owners and the miners’ representatives, the Executive Committee of the Mine Workers’ Federation met to-night and passed a resolution with the effect of delaying decision as to handing in strike notices. The ex) ecutive had been authorised by th* delegates’, conference in December to order the handing in of notices so thai( they should become effective on Janm ary 27 unless satisfactory were made. Last night the executivg informed Mr Crookshank that the pro) posals communicated yesterday by thq colliery owners’ representatives werd not satisfactory. To-night’s decision, however, postpones the final_ resolve foi or against strike action until a further delegates’ conference be convened for January 24 to hear a report on the negotiations, which have not yet ended) for there is to be another joint meeting between the owners and the unions* representatives on January 23. ■ No further statement was issued by either side to-day, but it is known thai union officials were” going to urge th« owners to revise their offers with a view to -making them more satisfactory* The adjournment of the discussion ta a later date and the postponement d the men’s decision gives ground foi the hope that in the opinion of both sides the possibilities of, reaching ah agreement are not exhausted.
