N.Z. BOWLS TOURNEY
FIRST DAY OF RINKS 136 TAKING PART [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, January 10. Thirteen greens were in use to-day for the start of the rinks championship in tho New Zealand Bowling Tournament. Sectional play will continue until Tuesday next. One hundred and thirtysix rinks took part, including five made up of members of the visiting party from New South Wales. The title was defended by Grey Lynn, skipped by H. Whittle, but with one change in the other three players. Again the weather was overcast and threatening for the start of play, but the greens were in excellent order. The rinks were divided into sections of 10 or more, each team playing two games a day for four days, each same being of 25 heads. Post-section play will then start on the automatic two-life principle, with three games of 21 heads each day. To qualify for post-sectional play, rinks must have won six or more games in their sections, won their sections, or tied as section winners. In the postsectional play a team twice defeated will not continue. Last year’s champion _ 'rink, Grey Lynn, is defending its title with H. Whittle as skip, but with J. Higginson, as third man in place of W. Liversidge. Linwood, the 1934 winners at Dunedin, when the rink comprised G. Dickson, F. Redpath, H. F. Gibson, and H. Wilson (skip) is again contesting the title with one change, S. Snedden replacing Gibson, who is now a resident of Auckland, and is skipping the Balmoral rink in the championship. Wilson and Snedden are also among the surviving pairs players. Results SECTION A. C.L.C. Thorudon (Casey) 25, Ashburton (Higgins) 24. Christchurch (Brown) 21, Barrington (Ramsay) 13.
