WORKERS AND GOVERNMENT
UNIT OF CONTACT PROPOSED [Pint UnJtßd Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, January, 9. A statement of his proposal for a national workers’ organisation was given by the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) to a reporter to-day. _ The main purpose of -the organisation, which would be a development of the New Zealand Workers’ Union, would be to provide a single legitimate channel for contact between the workers and the Government, Mr Semple said, so that the Government would no.t have to deal with individuals or groups, UiU with a single co-operating unit. “ As soon ns wo can fix new conditions,” Mr Semple said, “ the Public Works engineers will be asked to meet representatives of the New Zealand Workers’ Union to draft a national award covering nates of pay and all conditions of work.” The organisation would include all employees of, the Public Works Department and others who had no nnion affiliations at present..
