BOWLS CHAMPIONS

POST-SECTION PLAY IN PAIRS TWO DUNEDIN ENTRANTS SURVIVE (Special to tub ‘Star.'] CHRISTCHURCH, January 9. The weather was good for continuation of the pairs, and the greens were running much faster, the conditions being appreciated by competitors. Tyrrell and M'Kay have put up good; displays, only going out in the late, afternoon to Condor (Lyall Bay). They* won all three games on Wednesday,? and carried on the good work by down-'’ ing Graham (Hastings) in the after-:; noon, after receiving a default from T.( Edwards (Temuka) in the morning;, The Hastings pair wanted four to tin on the last end, and had them until Tyrrell, with his final bowl, smashed the Lead and lay two. Meeting Harris, (of •Kelhurn), who up to this stage was unbeaten, the Roslyn pair had a great set-to with the northerners, and it was anybody’s game right through. Three down on the nineteenth, Tyrrell got the points necessary to tie,. and on the last ! head Kelhurn were lying a safe two,{ but the -Roslyn skip, with one of hiacharacteristic drives,, burned the head. 1 On the replay Harris again was just too good, and notched the two necessary, to put Tyrrell and M‘Kay on the bank.Lloyd and Scott (lead) haye also gone very well, and were section ties with four wins and one loss, only to go out to Smith (North End, Invercar-: gill) by a 10-point loss. The southernpair played too well for the Gale-; donian men. They scored a 3 and a 4 on the fourteenth and fifteenth, and the handicap was too great for the losers.

In the afternoon the play was of » high standard, the hot sun making the greens very fast, while very little wind made the playing areas, nearly perfect. Claridge and Hinchcliff (lead), who were unbeaten on the first day, won their next two games, Furnell (of Epsom) providing them . with a good game, but the Caledonian men went away toward the end. They then accounted for Hetherton (Beckenham) rather easily, and meeting Condor (of Lyall Bay) they were down in the early stages and allowed the Wellington pair .to get a handy load. But Hinchcliff then planted them on the' jack in great style, and the Caledonian men began to pick up their leeway, and the fast end was entered upon all square. Claridge had an excellent chance of winning, but played rather weakly,, at lowing Condor to beat him by a point After a stubborn contest, Hardley and Bremner were eliminated from the pairs this morning, and this enabled the singles match between Walker and the AVest Bnder fo be staged. . A big following watched the game, which was quite an interesting one. The Aucklander got away early, and established a useful lead, but Bremner rallied well and came within striking distance, only to see his opponent go away again, and at the finish the winner was a few points up.' Walker was consistently steady, and the loser was forced to drive on several occasions. C. Hardley, who had a bye, now meets tho winner, and this game will com© on next week, and is sure to attract a big gallery. Walker is the only past champion to he left in the singles, and he is playing really well. His steadiness to-day was a big factor in his defeat of Bremner.

Alloo -went out of the pairs to-day, his play hardly being up to the standard of bis first three sessions. He may again play a game or/two out of the box in the singles, but I think the three northerners —Walker, Hardley, or Livingstone—with their great tournament experience behind them, will ,ply the winner, although Dr M'lnnes is playing splendidly. Hutchison • and Rigby went veiy solidly to-day, and they aye now in' the last 15. They have had some close calls, but have been equal to the occasion. They are a good combination, and take some beating. Handle and Ferguson are also well in the running, and have been disposing of their opponents in the proper Balmacewen style. The manner in which they eliminated King (Elmwood), who is still in the singles, and is recognised as a very capable man, was very impressive, and demonstrated very forcibly the prowess of the Dunedin pair; their next game later on next week should prove interesting. The 1934 rinks winner, H. Wilson, is Still in the doubles competition. He is partnered by S. Snedden, and those who saw him defeat Harraway in the final will admit that he is a very versatile player. Dunedin have (wo pairs left in the 15, and Ferguson and Hutchison may be relied upon to give of their best' when the harder games come up for decision. The Dunedin clubs have five chhmpionship pair winners to their credit, and it is quite possible that this year’s contest will make the sixth. . . The New South Wales visitors have provided two pairs, which are > ‘ ill in the running. Morris and W. Law arc the respective skips, and tney are r.naing the greens to their liking. The rinks will be commenced at 9.30 to-day, when a game will be decided in the morning, and another in the afternoon, both games being of 2o heads. Some interesting play is expected. ' ' , A . The weather was very threatening during the afternoon, and a thunderstorm 0 seemed imminent; but it passed over and there is every indication for the continuation of good conditions.
