WEST HARBOUR BOROUGH

COUNCIL'S MONTHLY MEETING * The monthly meeting of the West Harbour Borough Council was held last night, and was attended by the following:—The Alayor (Air A. Smith), Crs J. Coutts, H. Davis, W, Forgie, F. W. Venn, J. L. Page, J. Robb, T. F. Rodger, J. M. Kay, and F. H. Hudson. DEPUTATION FROAI BAND. A deputation from . the West Harbour Brass Baud, consisting of Alessrs L. Gillanders (president), A. Grubb, , E. AUPhail, and Holdaway, waited upon the council with a view to receiving financial assistance from the council, either in the nature of a subsidy or-support for the formation of a 'municipal band. 1 Mr Gillanders said that the band had been running for many years with very i little assistance from the public. The ■ band was very much indebted to the council for assistance received in the ’ past, but would now like the council to subsidise it, in the same way as was done by other councils in boroughs and municipalities. The band had been en- . deavouring to raise funds from dances • and concerts, but these efforts were not , sufficient to provide enough money for the hand to carry on. That they had a good band was proved at the last contest, but the state of its uniforms was responsible for the loss of points in the quickstep competition.. The uniforms had been in use for a long time, and ] were now in a dilapidated state. He ; thought that the band was an asset to - the district, and if it did not carry on ] other bauds would soon carry off its ! players. . . J The other members of the deputa- - tion supported the remarks of Air Gillanders, Air Grubb asking for a subsidy ; of £35 to form, a municipal band, and . pointing out some of the useful services : rendered by the band to public bodies in the district. i In reply to a question from Cr Venn, Mr Gillanders said that the band’s instruments were of good quality and j free of debt, but they still owed a previous bandmaster part of his salary. This was being paid off weekly by members of the band. TVday they had a ( good bandmaster, but if his money was not sure there was nothing to prevent him from going to another band. At the last annual meeting he was voted a salary of £‘26 per annum. Gr Robb said that he would be pleased to support the request, but pointed out that West Harbour was not in. the same position as such boroughs as Green Island and Port Chalmers, which received considerable revenue from trading concerns.

Upon retirement of the deputation, Cr Venn moved that a sub-committee be appointed to meet the band to discuss the matter further. He thought that the. band deserved the council’s support. Cr Robb said that, while he was anxious to help The band, he thought that the council would have to act cautiously in the matter, as various other bodies were also deserving of assistance. He thought that if an increase in the rates, sufficient to meet the additional expense, were made, the ratepayers would not raise any serious objection. Cr Venn contended that it ‘would not be necessary to increase the rates. The Mayor supported the motion, although he did not know where the money was going to come from/ The motion was carried. . .i . BUS SHELTERS. Advice was received from the acting district engineer of - the New Zealand Railways that the supply of material for the erection of three bus shelters in the Duhedin-Port Chalmers area’ had been approved, the shelters to be erected by the council. FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported that £1,136 10s 9d had been collected during the past month, and that accounts amounting to £4ll 9s had been passed , for payment.—The report was approved. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The inspector reported that the following work had been done during the month: —Work had been steadily going ahead at Roseneath. ’ Patching had been effected to the road in No. 1, No. 2 No. 3, and No. 4 divisions.
