POLICEMAN'S GOOD LOOKS
Upon the values of a man’s good looks Mr Justice Branson decided an interesting action at the Wiltshire Assizes. He awarded £350 damages to Police Constable Maurice' O’Donnell, of the Wiltshire Constabulary, against H. H. Reynolds, water hauler, ot Yatton, Bristol, for injuries received by a lorry. Police Constable O’Donnell claimed among other things that as a'result of the accident his jaw had sunk, that his nose had been placed on one side, and that consequently he was permanently disfigured. Asked-by Mr Herrick Collins, his counsel, how his disfigurement affected him, O’Donnell replied: “ I think quite a lot of my face. It is the only thing which shows to the world, and I believe people are apt to under-estimate. me through my disfigurement.” Mr Justice Branson’s comment in giving judgment was, “ Whereas, at the moment, he seems very upset at the disfigurement he has suffered, it is my experience that although this disfigurement makes a man feel very conscious at first, he becomes used to it, and takes no ' more notice of it than his friends.
“As for saying it affects' his personality. after all personality in a man does not rest in his face. If he had been a film star different considerations would have come into the question.”
