TOO SHORT RUNWAY

PILOT'S HAZARD (Fib TTnitbd PbeA Association.] WHAKATANE, July 17. A sensational forced landing was made by iPilot M, H. Bateman in a Hawke’s Bay-East Coast Aero Club machine in the seven-acre paddock of the Whakatane domain at 1.30 p.m. to-day. Flying alone, Mr Bateman left Hastings for Gisborne. He lost his way in the cloudy weather over the hills and landed at Whakatane with only two gallons of petrol in the tank. After refuelling, he took off on less than 200yds of runway, struck a pine tree with the end of the left lower wing, swerved dangerously, but gained the desired altitude, and returned in the direction of Gisborne.

The plane arrived at Gisborne at 4.30 p.m.
