TOBACCO SCALES.
TO THE 1 EDITOI:.
Sir, —My attention has been drawn to a most unfair letter which appeared in last night’s ‘ Star ’ under the heading ‘ Tobacco Scales ’ and over a nom-dc-plume “ Fair Deal.” If your correspondent lived up to his nom-cle-plume he would refrain from accusing many traders of unfair practices because of what might be an unreasonable grievance against one particular trader. On behalf of my fellow traders L would state that wo are at all times anxious to deal fairly and squarely with our buying public, who can rest assured that when they buy a certain weight of tobacco they receive at least the exact weight without thg, paper hag being weighed in, and the experience of retail tobacconists in Dunedin is that we only weigh 15 ounces out of a pound weight of tobacco, proving that in most cases the buyer receives a shade more in weight than lie actually pays for. If “ Fair Deal ” really lias a grievance all he has to do is to report the fancied offender to the inspector of weights ami measures, one of whose duties is to protect the public in such cases.—l am, etc., ~ Vivian S. J'acoiis. May 11.
