SWIMMING CARNIVAL TO-NIGHT
'Miss D. Symon, the well-known Southland swimmer and holder of the New Zealand intermediate 220yds girls’ championship, will arrive to-night, and efforts are being made to get her to compete at the Otago Centre’s King s Jubilee carnival at the Municipal Baths later in the evening. Walter Jarvis will make an attempt on- the New Zealand 100 metres back-stroke record of 73 2-sseo held by George Low, of Canterbury, and Geoff. Chambers will endeavour to improve on his own New Zealand breast-stroke record of 59 1-5 sec. A special attraction will be tlie old buffers’ race. The annual water polo match between Otago and the Test of Otago will be played, the Otago team being captained by M. Taylor and the rest of Otago by D. H. Symes. Among the amusing novelties will be a blindfold race and a plate dive, and there will be a burlesque diving and swimming sketch by the well-known fancy and stunt diving troup, compns. ing Reg. Geddes, P. E. Mathieson, A. Williams, and N. Williams. The 133 l-3yds four-a-side relay handicap will be a novel event, the swimmers being required to swim breast-stroke,.back-stroke, free style, add side-stroke respectively. Some of the best seniors and juniprs in the province have entered for the 100yds mterclub breaststroke handicap, and the 33 t-Jyos ladies’, 50yds junior and intermediate, and 33 l-3yds back-stroke events have drawn gdbd entries. Miss Gwen Rix, who was runner-up in the national ladies’ championship this year,- mil give an exhibition of plain and fancy diving; This is the final carnival of the season, and as competitors and officials alike are paying for admission ■ m order to improve the centre’s finances, it is hoped there will also be a large attendance of the public. •-
