EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE

OTAGO SUB-BRANCH The annual meeting of the 1 Dunedin sub-branch of the Otago Educational Institute was held in the institute rooms, Moray place, on Friday. Mr A. Hanna, the president, submitted the following report of the activities of the past year:—

Important matters which have been discussed at our business meetings include the following topics ‘ Rationing Scheme for Junior Teachers, ‘ Down-grading of Schools,’ ‘ Superannuation,’ ‘ Raising of Money by Scliool Children,' ‘ Size of Classes. ‘ Proposed Concession Regarding Average Attendance of Schools,’ ‘ The Position of Senior Assistants in Decapitated Schools.’ It is obvious from the lowerattendance at business meetings that teachers generally are satisfied to leave mattox-s pertaining to the professional side of our work to a small section ot teachers. This might be taken as evidence of confidence in those responsible for carrying out executive functions, but it is certainly not in the best interests of the teaching community. Our Social Committee has rendered another year’s valuable service. We are glad to have the opportunity 'of welcoming the following exchange teachers: —Miss M. Donaldson and Mr H. Kersey, from Queensland; and Miss J. Webb and Mr L. Williams, from England. > The election of officers resulted: President, Mr C. Parr; vice-president, Mr E. E. L. Forrester; secretary, Miss V. Hayward ; committee —Messrs J. Armstrong, A. Milne, H- Forsyth, J. MTv. Miller, J. Lenihan, Dr Boraman, Miss B. Woodhouse; Social Committee—Misses M. Morris. J. Hendry, B. Sincock, V.
