SERVICES TO BOXING

MR F. J. CAMPBELL HONOURED After many years as president of the Otago Boxing Association, Mr F, J. Camnblcl retired at the amnia! meeting last month on account of his impending departure for England, and on Saturday night Ids services to boxing over a long period of years mere recognised by the association executive, which tendered him a farewell in Mr J. H. A. M'Keefry’s board room. Many tributes were paid to Mr Campbell’s work for the sport not only in Otago, but throughout New Zealand, and"he was also made a presentation.

The newly-elected president of the Otago Boxing Association (Mr R. S. Glendining) was in the chair, and he stated that Mr Campbell had been a very worthy president for many years. In following Mr Campbell as president he had no easy task, since Mr Campbell had set so high a standard. From the North Cape to Bluff Mr Campbell’s name was known so far as boxing was concerned, and his sound judgment and his rulings had had a very great deal to do with putting the Otago Boxing Association on the map.—(Applause.) Mr Glendining said that he was a comparatively young member of the association, and tho presentation had been entrusted to one of those who had served with Mr Campbell for so long. Mr J. Kilmartin said that there was little need for'him to elaborate on Mr Campbell’s good work in the sport, ns it was well known to them. Mr Campbell had resigned his position as president to take a trip abroad, and they wished him and Mrs Campbell a very pleasant voyage and a happy holiday. They hoped it would restore him to health and vigour. On behalf of the executive, Mr Kilmartin presented Mr Campbell with a travelling bag, engraved in gold. Air T. Gillies said that as an old member lie desired to add his appreciation of the work done by Mr Campbell as president for many years. _Ho had led the Otago Boxing Association ably, and his judgment had always been wclldelincd. He carried with him the good wishes of members of tho association and all with whom lie had come into contact in the city. Mr W. D. Wilson said that Mr Campbell was an able chairman, and had devoted much time to the promotion of amateur and profession! boxing in New Zealand. His aim had always been for the betterment of the sport. The good work done by Mr Campbell and the optimism he had inspired should enable the Otago Boxing Association to again take its place of the major associations of New Zealand.—(Applause.) Messrs S. Brown, A. M Donald, H. Bowie, R. Fulcher, W. 6. Glengarry, J. Glover. P. Ruston, and T, Long endorsed the remarks of _ previous speakers, all joining in wishing Mr Campbell a pleasant holiday, Mr Campbell thanked members for their handsome ■ present and for their good wishes to him and Mrs Campbell. He had been most happy in the Otago Boxing Association, and he thanked his executive for the loyal support it had always given him. He expressed the hope that Mr , " ■ Glondining .y;would Mr F. J. Campbell.'have as pleasant a time as president as he had had. He trusted that Monday's contest 'would bo the start of a run of success for boxing in New Zealand, and said he felt sure boxing would come* back again. H 6 hoped to see some good boxing in England, and on liis return would be most happy to rejoin the association, lie had served boxing in most capacities—the, only position he had not filled had been that of secretary. Ho had been president of the New Zealand Boxing Association, and had also'acted as "doorboy” in the pit. He hoped the association would bare a very successful year.
