FRENCH ADMIRAL’S WIDOW

FORCED TO ENTER POOR HOUSE PROMISED PENSION WITHHELD . Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright PARIS, February 27. (Received February 28, at 1.5 p.m.) Madame Gauchet, widow of Admiral Gauchet, the war-time commander of the French Mediterranean Fleet, has been forced to enter the poor house . She did not receive a pension because her husband was placed on the retired list before their marriage. Admiral Gauchet died in 1931, refusing national burial honours unless his widow was provided for in accordance with his position. Madame Gauchet was assured that she would receive a pension and thereupon agreed to Admiral Gauchet’s burial with full honours among the national heroes. Subsequently the Senate rejected a special Pension Bill. Madame Gauchet now threatens to demand Admiral Gauchet’s body and rebury it simply, as he would have wished if he had known the promise would be broken.
