THE MAGNETIC JEAN MUIR

FEATURED IN 1 DESIRABLE ' Desirable,’ the story of the unsophisticated daughter of a sophisticated actress —a story full of sweetness and pathos, made still more appealing by the excellent acting of the attractive Jean Muir, the beautiful Verree Teasdale, and big George Brent—comes to the St. James Theatre to-morrow. It is a picture drama full of brightness and of wide appeal, and also presents a new actress with a magnetic personality in Jean Muir. The simple trusting- nature of the daughter Lois (who toys with love as a romance), and the hard, experi-ence-shaped character of the mother (to whom love is a physical realism) provide the contrast on which the play is built; and the plot gains in subtlety when one man (George Brent) becomes the target of both the mother’s passion and the daughter’s reverence. In praising the wonderful way in. which Jean Muir presents the soul simplicity of the young girl one should give equal praise to the sophisticated character with which Verree Teasdale endows the mother. George Brent, too, has never been seen to better advantage. In these days, when so much of the sentimentalism of picture dramas rings false. ‘ Desirable ’ sfnnds out as an agreeable exception well worth a visit from anyone looking for a good story and a new actress of genuine power. The supporting programme will feature an assortment of entertaining itenis.
