NORTH OTAGO DEFEATS SOUTH CANTERBURY

A DRAWN GAME The first representative cricket match to be played in Oamaru this season took place at the School Grounds on Saturday, when North Otago played a drawn game with South Canterbury. The weather was ideal for cricket, although a fog in the morning somewhat obscured vision and made it difficult for the batsmen against tbe fast bowlers. North _ Otago had first strike on a perfect wicket with a fast outfield, and the opening batsmen, TJttley and Brown, took the score to the half-century before the partnership was broken. Zimmerman came in next and immediately attacked the bowling in his usual delightful style. He was out Ibw to a good 1 ball from Seaton. Brooker commenced well and the score mounted steadily. M'Donald started confidently, but was smartly stumped by Alien when attempting a big hit. Brooker kept plodding along steadily, and, with Taylor, helped to consolidate North Otago’s position. Davey and Firth failed to reach double figures, hut Maddigan gave a good display for 16. Tonkin was out to a good ball from Davies before he had scored, and with nine wickets down for 268 runs the North Otago captain declared. Brooker, with. 77 runs to his credit, was undefeated. Davies was the most successful bowler for South Canterbury, securing four wickets for 44 runs.

South Canterbury were faced -with a formidable task when Button and Davies the opening batsmen, went in to commence the first strike. Button started auspiciously, but Davies lost his wicket when 6, and Murchison came in. Runs came quickly for a time until Button was (well caught by- Taylor when the game slowed up, several bowling changes failing to entice the batsmen to go for a hit. Allen was dismissed when 25, and then the side collapsed, four batsmen following in quick succession. At this stage time was called and the match was declared a draw. Zimmerman was the most successful bowler for North Otago. Scores:—
