PLUNKET SHIELD " AUCKLAND STRONGEST ALL-ROUND TEARS " [Pee United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, January 23. • Mr Phillips, manager of the Welling'* ton Pluuket Shield team, on his return from Auckland this morning, paid tribute to the standard of Auckland cricket. He said: “We are satisfied Auckland has the strongest all-round side in the dominion to-day, and its failure against Canterbury is absolutely unaccountable. The batting is sound right through, and the bowling also very solid. Townsend, who was the outstanding bowler in our match, was brilliant in the second innings, when he was helped to some extent by the pitch.” HAWKE GUP CRICKET [Pee United Press Association.] PALMERSTON N., January 23. The Hawke Cup match, Hawke’s Bay v. Manawatu (the holders) was continued in fine weather. Manawatu carried its overnight score of 178 for seven wickets to 270, all out. R. Hatch compiled a very confident 86. Hawke’s Bay made a disastrous start in its second innings, losing five wickets at luncheon for 53 runs.
