FREIGHTER IN DISTRESS
JAPANESE VESSEL SENDS S.O.S. TWO SKIPS PROCEEDING TO HER AID Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. SAN FRANCISCO, January 21. (Received January 22, at 10 a.m.) The Globe wireless station intercepted an S.O.S. from the Japanese freighter Hokuman Maru, with thirtyfive men aboard from Vancouver to Osaka (Japan). She had a starboard list of I7cleg and was taking water. Her position was several hundred miles west of Cape Flattery. The Kasku Maru is proceeding to her aid. also the United States coastguard cutter Chelan, from llort Angeles, Washington. GREW SAVED, SHIP ABANDONED

A wireless message stated that the crew of the Hokuman Maru, which was in distress west of Cape Flattery, had abandoned the ship. The President Jackson was standing by to pick up the lifeboats.
A later wireless message from the President Jackson'stated that the crew had been rescued and the Hokuman Maru had been abandoned in a sinking condition.
The President Jackson is proceeding to Victoria.
