"DIVAN ROOM”
AN EFFECTIVE AND USEFUL DECORATION A “ divan room ” seems rapidly becoming a definition for live typo of combined bedroom and sitting-room that is increasingly demanded by young men. business women, and students. A recess formed by a chimney-breast is the most cosy and comfortable position for such a divan, while an embroidered panel, stretched on the wall behind, serves a double purpose. It brings the divan into relation with the rest of the furnishings, making it more complete and a more decorative feature, and at the same time it protects the wall from the rubbing it is bound to receive. Neither very elaborate nor very flowery patterns are suited to this position, but some bold applique design that follows horizontal lines is very suitable. The flight of aeroplanes, for example, could be worked on a ground that harmonised with the general colour scheme of any room. On a brown sail-cloth, in company with the polished surfaces of old oak furniture, it might contrast with brighter colours in the rest of the upholstery. In a room with buff walls and bedspread and chairs covered in indigo bine, it is effective in a heavy linen of the same bliuu The decoration should be placed high up on the panel; Hie cushions piled up against the Avail will not then break its lines. The length of the panel is a matter of taste. It is not necessary for if to run to the foot of the divan, and it looks better terminating about two feet from the end of this.
