FUNERAL AND CREMATION THIS AFTERNOON Last respects were paid .this atternoon to that much-loved friend of past and present University students and authorities, the late Professor John Macmillan Brown, whose body was cremated at the Anderson’s Bay Cemetery. The community of Christchurch, m which he lived for many years prior to bis demise, bade farewell at a largely attended service in the Canterbury College Hall yesterday morning, alter which the body was conveyed to Dunedin for cremation to-day. The funeral was uoji large, but it was representative of those in many capacities who bad come into contact with and won the friendship of deceased, who was so widely renowned. Chief mourners were the deceased s daughters, Mis A. M. L. Baxter (Brighton) and .Miss Viola Macmillan Brown (Christchurch), who were accompanied to the cemetery by Mrs J. A. Hanan. The pall-bearers were Mr W. D. Campbell,' of Timaru, who is one of the trustees of the estate, and Professors Bonham, Malcolm, Gowland, Andrew, and Adams. The Otago University Council was represented by Sir Linde Ferguson, Dr James Fitzgerald, Mr J. W. Dove, and Mr H. Chapman (the registrar), and others in attendance included Sir James Allen, Professor White, Dr C. Hanan, Messrs Mark Hanan. Willi Fels, J. G. Butler, D. J. Russell (manager of the Perpetual Trustees, Estate, and Agency Company, and A. Lindsay (secretary’ of the South Canterbury Teachers’ Institute). Many beautiful, floral tributes from Christchurch were received in addition to those forwarded by Dunedin mourners. The cortege left the undertakers mortuary in Clark street at 1.45 for the Crematorium, where a dignified and impressive service was conducted by the Bishop of Dunedin, the Right Rev. W. A. R. Fitchett. The body of the late professor, formerly of the staff of Canterbury College, and at the time of his death Chancellor of the University of New Zealand, lay in state in the Canterbury College luill yesterday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A brief service, attended by many old friends and associates, was held, at which memorial addresses were delivered by the Hon. J. A. Hanan, M.L.C., proehancellor of the University of New Zealand, Mr C. T. Aschman, chairman of the Canterbury University College Council, and Dr James Hight, rector of Canterbury College. Tributes were paid by all speakers to Professor Macmillan Brown’s inspiring enthusiasm as a teacher and his great services to education. , The pall-bearers by whom the coffin was conveyed into the hall were the Hon. J. A. Hanan, M.L.C., Professor T. A. Hunter (vice-chancellor of the University of New Zealand), Emeritus Professor W. P. Evans, Dr J. Hight, Mr H. E. Von I laasf, Mr A. E. Flower (members of the Senate and old students of Professor Macmillan Brown), Mr C. T. Aschman (chairman of the Canterbury University College Council), Mr E. T. Norris (registrar of the University of Now Zealand), and Mr B. A. Barter (president of the Canterbury College Students’ Association). A telegram was received from the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, and read by the Hon. J. A. Hanan :

The University of New Zealand has my sincere sympatli in the loss which she has sustained by the death of her venerable and distinguished Chancellor. His erudition, culture, and intellectual versatility have materially enriched this dominion during the last sixty years. '
