THE TAIERI SHOW

EMINENTLY SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE NOTABLE EXHIBITION OF STOCK Though rain had fallen on Friday night, and the weather .early on Saturday looked threatening, a beautiful summer afternoon was experienced lor the Taieri' Show. This annual event proved one of the most successful in the history of the society—four years have gone by since that body was formed. The public patronised the show in large numbers,.and many motor cars were arranged in rows around the show ring, and helped to make a good setting. Following the/ judgmg there was the grand parade .of stock, and it was a truly magnificent spectacle to see some hundreds of cattle and horses prize-winners of all breeds, marching ■ slowly in jirocession around the enclosure, in perfect sunshine, and to the music of the Municipal Band, bellowing • were riders on outstanding specimens of horse flesh, ponies, buggy horses, etc. This was 1 shot by tho camera men for the movie. Down on the Farm.' ; , , , , , The catalogue opened with beef shorthorns. Every entry in this section was ■ owned by the estate of the late J. W. ■ Blair. Mr Blair’s sons —now. Idling the positions held hot only by their late father, but also by their late grandfather, led the sires and dams and ■ vearlings round the rum, some bearing . the yellow champion ribbon. Milking Shorthorns figure well on the Taieri. There are several varieties of .the breed. Amongst the largest exhibitiors were . the Millers, Bathgates, and Struthers. Heartened by Saturday’s success many of these prize-winners will be shown in Dunedin this week. . , The Ayrshires looked a picture, this type of milker is a showy animal, and the exhibits of Mrs and Miss Taylor, Messrs Young, Thomson, and Marshall were one of the attractions of the parade. Some fin© Jerseys ' made a good showing, particularly the bulls. ’ The exhibits were fairly evenly divided between Messrs B. S. Irwin, S. Taylor, Little, A. C. Goodlet, A. Hamilton. J. It. Grainger, J. S. Blackie, Wm. Marshall, R. J., Moore, T. Howell, S. loung, A. Reid, E. Gibson, Miles, and G. Barron. Tne judge spoke highly of the whole entry. Friesians claimed a lot of attention, and the entry was a largo one. . Mr Geoi. Stevenson secured the champion ribbon in the class for senior bulls', and the principal prize-winners were Mrs M’Hattie, Messrs G., f. Bathfate, G. M. Ford, and W. N, Taylor, he'estate of the late Mrs M. Grant had-things all its own way in the Red Polls, some excellent animals being amongst the entry. Under the heading of cross-breds and milkers many good cows and heifers were shown. In this section school children had for competition many first-rate calves. The Silverstream Dairy Company, the Momona, Mosgiel, Maungatua, and Henley Dairyfactories presented'a 10-guinea cup , for cow or heifer gaining most points in type and production. This was won by Mr G. T. Bathgate. A special prize was also donated by the Taieri and Peninsula Milk Supply Company for the best type of dairy cow. It was , won by Mrs M’Hattie. : The draught, horses' made a great showing. In fifteen classes there were fifty-nine exhibits from the stables of the following:—Estate of the late J. W. Blair, Messrs A. Wilson. John Campbell, John Young, J. A. Williamson,,A. Moynihan, R. Spratt, J. M’Neill, Janies Dow, .Peter' Dow, D. Reece, F. <|hlmson, R. Hamilton, D. ? Hannah, A.' Bathgate, Win. The reserve champion was owned by Mr A. Wilson. The champion . mare orf filly- and the reserve champion were both the property of Mr John Young. Light horses embraced many wellshown animals, and in connection with this section the competitions were held.: The'prize for the hackney hroocj ntare, was won by John Campbell. The best troop horse trophy went to Mr J. R. Brown. The show of ponies was a creditable one, and it was a delight to see them in. the trots. The competitions were watched .with great interest. Many- horses prominent in the hunts went over the hurdles. The sheep pens were well filled with Border Leicesters, Romney Marsh. Southdown, and cross-breds. The chief exhibitors were Messrs John Miller John M'Donald, tho estate of the late ■ J. W. Blair, David Russell. J. A. Wil-. liamson, and A. J. Smellie. All the entries in the fat sheep were shown byhalf a dozen exhibitors, and the honours were shared fairly- evenly between them. The hall in which the dairy produce, baking, and preserves acre displayed was frequented all day by the ladies.
