RELIEF OF DISTRESS

NEED FOR HELP STILL EXISTS DEPUTY MAYOR’S APPEAL ■■ ■ -“flit The deputy-mayor (Mr J. J. Marlow), acting with the mayor’s relief organisation, is making an appeal tor funds to enable the organisation to continue its functions.. Mr Marlow explains that last year an appeal was made to the citizens of Dunedin to provide the sum of £IO,UOU to supplement the meagre earnings of men engaged on relief works and others ot onr people who are suffering undue hardship as the result of flic depression. That goal was reached by approximately £6,U00 being received in direct contributions to the fund and the other half coming by way of the proceeds from tho queen carnival. The money so provided is now almost exhausted, and will be fully expended by the end of the year. The fund has been faithfully spent, and has been- of untold help to many deserving families. Primarily, h® method followed by the committee of public-spirited citizens who are administering the fund is to use it in subsMising the purchase of fuel and clothing, together with contnbnlions of food supplies in cases of sickness oi other special circumstances. It should give contributors to the fund a feeling of assurance to know that the best possible use is made of the money. The city is divided into districts, and a few willing workers in each district control the activities ot the sectional depots. An important part of their duty is to satisfy themselves. by investigation, regarding the merits of all requests for assistance that come to their notice. The functions of these sectional committees again are co-ordinated by a Central Committee, upon which each of the districts is represented. The organisation is completed by the general control of all expenditure by the Advisory Finance Committee, consisting of Messrs A. C. Matbeson (chairman). P. L. Halsted, J. Hogg. J. Begg. P. R. Sargood, and J. Farqnharson. Ry these several means the best possible use is made of the money.

Last year’s £IO,OOO, as already stated, is just about exhausted, and, while the number of our citizens who are dependent upon the relief which such a fund supplies is reduced as compared with a year ago. there are still, unfortunately, many who can look to no other source. for ranch-needed help, except to such a, fund. This reduction in the number of those who are sadly affected by the depression prompts' the committee to entertain the hope that £5,000 for expenditure over the next ensuing twelve months should suffice to meet its requirements. That, however, implies that the total contribution from direct giving will need to be on the same basis as last year, as there is to be no supplementary source this year similar to the queen carnival venture that was a part of last year’s appeal. “ I feel convinced,” concluded the Deputy Mayor. “ that the generonsminded citizens of Dunedin require only fo be assured that the need for their help is still existing, and that the funds that are provided bv their generosity are well and faithfully administered by n band of earnest, civic-minded fel-low’-citizcus, to ensure a ready response to this further appeal. ‘He gives twice who gives quickly.’ ” We shall be pleased to receive and acknowledge'■ the contributions to the fund.
