ROYAL MALE CHOIR

The Royal Dunedin Male Choir has a fine record of concerts of consistent merit, and the one to be presented at the Town Hall on Tuesday promises to be equal to the best, including a bright selection of part songs, folk songs, festival carols, and operatic extracts. Mrs N. R. Henderson, of Invercargill, who has a delightful soprano voice, will be the lady soloist, and reports from the south show that her work with the Invercargill Operatic Society has won her a high place in the record of music lovers. In October she sang with M. Chostiakoff the famous 1 Miserere ’ duet from 1 11 Trovatore,’ and scored a distinct triumph. She sang ‘ One Fine Day’ (Puccini), a number she will present at this concert, and gave sheer delight to her hearers. Her voice has power, is well controlled, and even in pianissimo passages never loses that carrying power which belongs to the artist. Mrs Henderson will also present a bracket of songs, ‘ When the Wind’s in the Chimney ’ (Sanderson) and ‘ §ong of the Night ’ (Loughborough). On Tuesday evening the choir will appear in two carols arranged by Dr. Galway, in one of which a boy soprano will take the part of the page in ‘ Good King Wenceslas,’ and Mr Roland W. Dunbar the tenor solo. Master Robert Watkins, the soprano, will also be heard in ‘ Rose Softly Blooming ’ (Spobr). Other choir items will be ‘ Keltic Lament ’ (Foulds), the tuneful ‘ All Through the Night,’ a,, Welsh air (Finlay) and the popular chorus ‘ Roll the Old Chariot Along’ (Young). The choir will also sing two Wagner numbers, ‘ The Pilgrim’s Chorus,’ from ‘ Tannhauser,’ and ‘A Roman War Song,’ and the festival earol ‘ Ring Out, Wild Bells.’ Miss Ethel Wallace will be the violinist, and her items are by Schubert, Friedberg, Isold and Tschaikowsky. A duet with obbligati by Miss Wallace and Mr John Dick (’cello) will be. sung by Mr R. A. Mitchell and Mr J. I). M'Kechnie. The choir soloists are Mr Ernest Paris and Mr John Galloway.
