COUNTING THE PREFERENCES
THE FEDERAL ELECTIONS HEARING THE END Press Associa tion —By Telegraph —Copyright. SYDNEY, September 25. Finality lias been almost reached in the House of Representative election figures, but the Senate returns will not b© completed until towards the end of next week. Two contests in the House of Representatives are still undecided in New South Wales —namely, the Macquarie and Darling seats. The United Australia Party retained the Barton seat in face of fierce opposition and the new boundaries, which it was thought would favour Labour; but the Werriwa seat reverted to State Labour from the Country Party. An exciting struggle for the Corangamite seat, in Victoria, ended in the United Australia Party candidate ousting the Country Party supporter. The Government, however, suffered two unexpected reverses in Tasmania, losing the Denison and Franklin seats to Labour hy narrow margins. The Government at present lias thirty-three seats in a House of seventyfour, and expects to retain Macquarie, the result of which will probably be known to-morrow. The Country Party has 14, Federal Labour 18, and State Labour 8, with a possibility of 9. The Senate figures continue to indicate that the Government candidates will win, with substantial majorities, five of the six seats.
