M. A. Ilott, governor of the district, who has been ill in the United States, is making a good recovery and will return to New Zealand by leisurely stages, arriving about the end of next month. s Major J. W- Oldfield, C.M.G.,- • 0.8. E., M.C., a member of the Ceylon Tea Propaganda Board and chairman of directors of Messrs Lea Hedges and Co., Ltd., of Colombo, arrived in Dunedin yesterday, ■ Major Oldfield, who was horn _ in British Guia,na, began his connection with the tea industry in 1907, when he went to Ceylon as a planter. He had a distinguished career during the World War, serving in France for four years.: He was through the Battle of Loos, fought on the Somme, and was gassed at Ypres. On six occasions he was mentioned in despatches, ‘and was awarded the M.C., 0.8. E., the Croix de Guerre, and was made a Chevalier of the Order. of St. Leopold. After the war he returned to Ceylon, where 'he has been closely identified with the mercantile and political life of that country. For six years he was a member of the Government. In 1932 he, was made a Companion of the Order of _ St; Michael and St. George in recognition of his public services to Ceylon. Major Oldfield is visiting Dunedin for the purpose of seeing everybody connected with the tea trade, so that he can .obtain their views on the tea situation. He hopes to visit Queenstown durixig the week-end and will (return to Dunedin for a few days next week. He will then leave for Christchurch, and will depart from Wellington on September 27 for Sydney. Among the guests staying at the To Anau Hotel last week-end wei'e: —Mrs W. R. Several of the visitors tried their hands at wild pig shooting and were rewarded with some good bags.
