DECISIVE DEFEAT

UNIMPROVED RATING PROPOSAL REJECTED BY 4,732 V9TEB WIDE INTEREST IN YESTERDAY'S POLL The proposal that the future system of rating should be on the basis of the unimproved value was decisively rejected by the ratepayers yesterday. The majority against the proposal was 4,732 votes out of a total valid ballot of 12,104 votes. The voting was:— For the proposal ... 3,686 Against the proposal ... 8,418 Informal ■ 83 The total number of ratepayers eligible to vote was 21,000, and the heavy polling on the single issue was evidence of the keen interest in the ' short campaign conducted by both sides. In 1931 'the voting was heavier, as the municipal elections were held on the same day, and the proposal was defeated by 8,104 to 5,700; but the adverse vote was further increased yesterday. At only two booths were the ballots in favour of the proposal, unimproved rating being supported at Martin’s shop, South road, and the Methodist Hall, Wesley street. The result was announced by the town clerk (Mi G. A. Lewin) to a crowd of 100 outside the Town Hall at about'B.3o p.th., and was greeted with cheers. Surprise was expressed by even the opponents of the proposal that the poll had been so decisive. The voting at the various polling booths was as follows: —
