FIRE IN MATTRESS MILL
OUTBREAK IN KAIKDRAI VALLEY BOY SEVERELY BURNT 'An outbreak of fire in Ellis’s mattress mill in the Kaikorai Valley , road this morning resulted in slight damage to the brick and iron building, and to the machinery, whilst the contents, principally kapok, were seriously damaged. The City Fire Brigade was summoned to the outbreak by an automatic alarm, and when the Roslyn section arrived on the scene the fire was burning fiercely, but was quickly subdued. The building and contents were insured in the United Office, The fire was also responsible for inflicting severe burns upon the head and arms of an employee. Roy Newman, aged fifteen years, residing at 36 Cannington road. He was caught in the kapok blaze, and was admitted to the hospital at 11.15 a.m., when he was immediately 'placed on the seriously ill list.. ,
