The Hou. J. Bitchener, Minister of Public Works, joined the express at Studholme to-day, and went on for Wellington. Sir Lindo Ferguson and Dr Newlands left this morning to attend a meeting of the Medical Council at Wellington, and will be back on Thursday evening. Mr G, H. MTndoe, orchard instructor, is on his way to Wellington. Mr C. B. Barrowclough, president of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce, left for Wellington by the 11.35 train to-day. Dr Ritchie, medical officer of health, called to Wellington on departmental business, travelled by the express train this morning. Mr Martin Cock was a passenger for Wellington by the mail train to-day. Mr C. W. Rattray left by the 11.35 train to-day for Wellington. Mr C. G. White, booked for Wellington, left by the 11.35 train to-day. Mr Alick M'Donald, the ex-Otago and New Zealand Rugby player, was seen off at the station this morning, booked for Wellington. Mr W. G. M‘Donald, managing director of the Mining House of New Zealand, returned from Dunedin to Christchurch to-day after completing details of the sale from the Nokomai Company to an English company. Mr Crosby Morns returned from the north by yesterday afternoon’s express. Hon. J. A. Hahan, M.L.C., arrived from Wellington by the express yesterday afternoon. Dr Dana Comau, who went south’ with Rear-admiral Byrd, and is now a member of the Ellsworth expedition, arrived in Dunedin yesterday, and is staying at the Grand Hotel. Mr J. R. Simpson, chairman of the New Zealand Boxing Council, is at present visiting Dunedin. Reference was made at last night’s meeting of the Otago Swimming Centre to the illness of Mr Doug. Thomson (vice-president), the chairman (Mr W. A. Jenkins) expressing the hope that Mr Thomson would make a speedy recovery.

Miss Jean Batten, who is at present in 'Wellington, has been confined to bed for the last three days with a severe cold. She will leave for Auckland on Friday to visit her parents. Miss Batten will return to Wellington on Maunganui for Sydney. She proposes to stay in Australia for the finish of the Centenary Air Race, and will probably return to New Zealand after the race. She will take her aeroplane with her. The Rev. J. S. Murray, of Queenstown, has accepted a call to the Kelburn Presbyterian Church, Wellington.Mr A. J. Conway, one of the secretarial staff of Mr Coates, Minister of Finance, has been appointed secretary to the Transport Co-ordination Board, a new position, as the work connected with this body had been previously undertaken by the Transport Department. Mr Conway has had long experience as Ministerial private secretary, having first entered this service under Sir James Allen, when he was Minister of Defence. Mr Conway was for many years secretary to the late Sir Maui Pomare. At a gathering of Ministerial secretaries, he was the recipient of a suitable present as a reminder of his pleasant associations with his colleagues, who expressed their good wishes for his career.—Wellington correspondent. _ Mr Warwick North was a passenger for Christchurch by this morning’s express.. Mrs J. Hawkins, whose death at sixty-five years of age took place to-day,-was the youngest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs B. Auchterlonie, who were early-day residents of Port Chalmers.One of her sisters was drowned in the wreck of the steamer Wairarapa. Mrs Hawkins’s late husband was a wellknown figure on the Harbour Board tugs some years ago. Sergeant W. D. Thom, who has been transferred to Dunedin on promotion from Ormondville, has taken up duty at the central police station. City Hotel guests; Mr C. Todd (Wellington), Mr E. C. Baker (Christchurch), and Messrs D. W. Robinson, E. Mills, and J. Johns (Invercargill).
