NAVAL ARMAMENTS
REDUCTION IN BATTLESHIPS JAPAN SUPPORTS BRITAIN Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright TOKIO, September 10.. The Foreign Spokesman states that Japan wants a new naval treaty to replace the present unsatisfactory pacts and reduce armaments and the people’s burdens. “ Our idea is not to start competition by, increasing armaments, hut to have navies insufficient for offensive purposes but sufficient for defensive purposes. Therefore, if other Powers agree, we are ready to scrap powerful, attacking weapons. We earnestly hope others are willing to work for such an agreement. Meanwhile the Navy and Foreign Offices are doing their _utmost to curb the publication of excitable rumours and encourage calmness.” The statement is interpreted to mean that Japan will support the British desire to reduce battleships.
