“THAT’S A LIE”
ANGRY EXCHANGES SCENE AT CITY COUNCIL MEETINQ [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, September 11. - After a 1 short but angry debate at a meeting of the City Council, Cr A. E. Armstrong defied the Mayor’s order to withdraw an expression or to leave the chamber. The exchanges began during a discussion on a forty-hour week. The Mayor said the question had been raised when the estimates were under consideration. At that time Cr Armstrong had sat quiet and had not said “ Boo.” “That’s a lie!” shouted Cr Armstrong. leaping to his feet. “Withdraw that remark, _Cr Armstrong,” said the mayor, ringing his bell. “ I won’t!” replied Cr Armstrong. “ Any councillor knows it’s a lie,” “ Leave the meeting,” the Mayor ordered. Finally an appeal to the council brought a motion of confidence in the mayor’s control and censure on Cr Armstrong’s behaviour.
