ADDRESS TO EX-SERVICEMEN ‘ Some Notable Episodes • of the Maori Wars ’ was the title of a most interesting' address given by Air J. J. Kenned/ to members of the Imperial ex-Servicemen’s Association in the Returned Soldiers’ Club Rooms last night. The speaker, described graphically the stirring days of the last century when the Aiaori fought desperately to stem the advance of the pakeha. The lecture was freely illustrated with lantern slides, which served to give the audience a very clear idea of the events described by the speaker. Air Kennedy devoted a considerable portion, of his time to a description of the activities of the notorious Te Kooti, whose depredations amounted almost to a reign of terror until his death finally put an end to his raiding. The disadvantages under which the British forces fought were adequately described by the speaker, and explained that many of the officers and men came to New Zealand after the Crimean War,, and the different conditions met with here were more than confusing. A tribute was paid to the services rendered by Von Tempsky, who showed his ability to cope with the. guerrilla type of warfare adopted by the Maoris, and did a great deal towards the success of tho white forces. , , , , The lantern slides included a large number of photographs of Maori chiefs and the custom of tattooing.
