BUILDING SUBSIDY SCHEME . “ One objection to the scheme may be that it applies only to domestic; work,” states the ‘ Journal of the N.Z. Institute of Architects,-' in discussing the

new building subsidy scheme (No. 12). “ The reason for this limitation appears to be that the Government, after many representations from various quarters, agrees with the forecast'that the drop in the building statistics indicates an almost certain shortage of houses—estimated now at 10,000 below the normal ratio. “ As the work of house building in particular provides such a stimulus to employment of all classes of labour and involves the circulation of money, it affords a reasonable means of assisting to tide over existing difficulties by making some kind of provision against a critical condition of another typo when financial conditions become more normal. If in the process of endeavouring to overcome the difficulties of both of those we can demonstrate that for the effective undertaking of good housing work the technical services of the trained architect are valuable and essential, we shall go a step further in securing official as well as public recognition.”
