Mr P. J. O’Regan returned north tins morning. At a meeting of the Royal Dunedin Male Choir on Saturday evening reference' was made by the chairman (Dr J. Thomson) to the loss the choir had suffered in the death of Mr M. S. ; Holmes. The deceased joined the Dunedin Liedertafel a month after its commencement in 1886, and was an active member for two years, during one of which ho acted in the capacity of librarian. For two periods amounting in all to nine years be was a vice-presi-dent of the choir. Mr H. M. Mackay returned from Wellington on Saturday night. A Gisborne Association telegram states that the funeral of Jack Ruru, the Maori footballer, who died from injuries received in a match at Rotorua, was one of the largest seen in the district. Maoris from far and near attended the ceremony, Government departments, local bodies, and sports organisations being represented. A British Official Wireless message from Rugby states that the War Office lias announced that Lieutenant-colonel Harrison, of the Green Howards, has been appointed general staff officer, first grade, of the British troops in China, with effect from March next.
