WOMEN’S GOLF

AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP NEW ZEALANDERS IN SEMI-FINAL SYDNEY, September 9. In the women’s championship quar-ter-finals the results were:— Miss B. Gaisford (New Zealand) defeated Misse Joan Hammond, 1 up. Mrs C. Robinson defeated Miss M'Leish, 4 and 3. Miss Oliver Kay (New Zealand) defeated Miss Lascelles, 2 and 1. Mrs Russell defeated Mrs Trelogan, 2 and 1. Miss Gaisford swung her shots away with delightful accuracy, and was 2 up at the turn. She outplayed Miss Hammond, the New South Wales champion, to the greens; but the issue was in doubt until the last, when. Miss Hammond fluffed two shots like the merest novice, and Miss Gaisford snatched victory. Miss Kay was also pressed by the Victorian, Miss Lascelles, only one hole being won on the outward trip, the remainder being halved. Miss. Kay went out in 40 "and Miss .Lascelles in 41. Miss Lascelles was never outdriven. She hit a much lower ball than her opponent, and but for two putting lapses on the homeward journey might easily have beaten Miss. Kay, who finished with 77. Miss Lascelles took 79 for the seventeen holes. , The semi-finals to-morrow-will be as follow:—Miss Gaisford v. Mrs Russell (Victoria), Miss Kay y. Mrs Robinson (Sydney). . The ‘ Sunday Sun,’ commenting on the New Zealanders’ play, praises Miss Gaisford’s etiquette. It says: “Her example might well be copied by other associates. As one instance, when she takes a divot she remains until the caddie replaces it. She always stands well away from the flag when, her opponent is putting.” NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP AUCKLAND, September 8.
