THE DEEPEST MINE
AIR-COOLING PLANT EFFICIENCY IMPROVED JOHANNESBURG, August 28. The initial cost of new air-cooliny plant which is to be installed in the Robinson Deep Mine will be £IOO,OOO, and its operation'will cost about £1,500 a month. The mine is now the deepest in the world, with a depth of 8,500 ft, which is 2,800 ft below sea level. It is calculated that the temperature in the most active workings of the mine,' which are in the region of 7,500 ft, will'be reduced by the new plant to that which formerly prevailed at 6,000 ft, and the company estimates that the saving effected by the improved underground labour efficiency will more than balance the cost of the plant. It is believed that the installation will make possible mining at even greater depths than those yet attained. i
