HOCKEY TEAMS WELCOMED The Australian and New Zealand hockey representatives who met in tile test Tnatch at Carisbrook this afternoon wore' welcomed by the mayor (the Rev. M. T. Cox) at a civic reception in the Council Chambers this morning. Mr Cox said that it gave him much pleasure to welcome the two teams to the city. The Australians, ho added, came from a great sporting country that had achieved considerable distinction in the worlds of cricket, tennis, and Rugby, and he had no doubt that it would score. similar distinction m hockey. “We arc great believers :n sport here,” said His Worship, and you will find that this city gives wide attention and facilities to Us encouragement. This is because we appreciate its real value.’’ (Applause.) Mr H. F. Payton, president ot the Otago Hockey Association, stated that international visits such as this were of immense value in very many ways. “ I wish to express public appreciation of the very sporting attitude the Otago Rugby Football Union has adopted in allowing us to use Carisbrook to-day, he said amid prolonged applause. “This is the spirit that should exist among kindred sporting associations. Others who spoke and welcomed the visitors were Mr H. Harris (Otago Rugby. Union). Mr T. Ruddimau (Otago Football Association), and Mr .). H. Thompson (Australian Society of Otago). Mr A. Lee (captain of the Australian team), Mr E. S. Watts (captain of the dominion side), Mr W. Rothwell (Australian manager), and Mr D. T, Woodfiekl (New Zealand manager) expressed appreciation of the warm welcome to the visiting players. “ You will see that 1 am a prophet by profession,” cheerfully concluded the Mayor, “ and I predict that our Scotch mist will lift and give you a fine, day .for your game.”
