WOMEN’S HOCKEY

DOMINION TOURNAMENT , YESTERDAY'S PLAY [Special to the ‘ Star.’] CHRISTCHURCH, September 7. Giving an inspiring exhibition of first-class hockey Eastern A defeated Canterbury A by 4 goal to 0 this afternoon, to win. its way to the final against Marlborough to-morrow, when the dominion women’s hockey tournament will be concluded. In order to determine the section B winners, Ruahine and Canterbury A played off in the morning, Canterbury gaining victory by 2 to 1 after a gruelling struggle. Canterbury was naturally tired when it had to play in the semi-final with Eastern later in the day, but even at its very best it could not possibly have secured a win, as Eastern played in brilliant fashion, the work of both the vanguard and the backs being wellnigh faultless. In all departments Canterbury was outclassed, and after the first ten minutes the issue was never in doubt. To the superiority in stickwork and ball control on the part of the winners must be added the fine backing up of one another and the sure clearing of the backs. The forwards infused dash into their efforts, and the combination of the whole line was excellent. Canterbury battled hard, but it was a losing fight all through, and its opponents always played confidently. The final takes place at Lancaster Park to-morrow afternoon as a cur-tain-raiser to the Canterbury-Waira-rapa Rugby match. Marlborough played a game with Central Otago, the latter winning by 2 to 1.
