EXPLOSION FOLLOWS FIRE

FIREMAN STUNNED [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, September 8. Fire occurred this morning in a shed at the hack of the Commerce Buildings, Hereford street, through inflammable goods catching alight while a man was mixing turpentine oyer a heater. AVhen the brigade arrived it used a chemical mixture, then the firemen entered the shed. Almost Immediately an explosion occurred, in which a fireman, J. Miller, was stunned and had to receive treatment. Two other firemen received lesser shocks, in each case their hair and clothing being singed. The blaze was finally extinguished, hut a certain amount of stock was destroyed—printing ink, turpentine, and polishes of a value of £2OO. The owner is Mr Douglas W. Adams, indent agent, with offices adjacent. When the outbreak started he made a hurried exit from the shed, as his hair and clothing were also singed.
