KEPT FOR THIRTY YEARS RAND GOLDFIELDS. JOHANNESBURG, August 30. New light on the discovery of the Rand goldfields has been shed by researches by Mr J. P. Nel in the Union archives in Pretoria. These researches show that gold was mined in the Rand in 1853, _ about thirty years before the later pioneers arrived, and that the real discoverer was P. J. Marais, who exhibited a sample of valuable ore at the Volksraad in Potchefstroom at the beginning of 1854. Marais, it is thought, agreed to beep tho discoveries secret from tho outside world on pain of death. •
