GAME 215. —“ Bristol Cross.”— [By G. M. Bonar, ex-Scottish champion, in Hamilton ‘Advertiser.’]
(a) The distinguishing move of the “ Bristol Cross.” > p ' (b) This position can be run up from a variety of openings. (c) The best move, here. (d) 2-6 is the old move here and quite good. (e) 28-24 is also good here. . (t) 18-14 and 28-24 can also be played here. , . , , (g) 27-23 is also played. It was taken m Stewart-Jordan match and many others. (h) 1-6 is a variation at this point; 12-16 loses. Jordan beat Stewart in 1897, the latter playing 12-16. (i) 31-26 also draws here. (k) 21-17 and 31-26 also draw. (l) 12-16 draws here. (m) 9-14, 24-20, 14-18, 15-11. White wins by “ First Position.” ' GAME 216. . —” Single Corner.”— The following instructive game !s by Mr N. Kubin, champion of California, and is taken from the 'Los Angeles ‘ Times ’;
Notes by N. Rubin. (a) Duffy’s “Single Corner” follows this 8-11 line by a different order of mores, and arrives at* this position, and says “ 13-17 draws.” Mr Duffy gives no further play, but his conclusion of a draw is erroneous, as the above shows. (b) Corrects Tcscheleit’s “ Master Play where 31-27 is given and leads to a Black win, but instead of White playing 1-8 at the fifth move after 31-27, White draws by 24-19, etc., as shown by W. ,A. Guttridge. The text move 31-26 at (b), however, sustains the Black win. (c) 24-19 at any stage is met by 32-28. GAME 217. —“ Ayrshire Lassie.”— [By R. Scobbie, Motherwell.]
Notes by Mr Scobbie. (a) A strong line. (b) 6-9, 17-13, 1-6 is the same. (c) The late R. Jordan, world’s champion, said this was a loss. (d) The late John Young, Burnbank, asked the critics, through the ‘ Glasgow Weekly Herald,' Black to play, what result. I have never seen anyone give play on it. I claim it a draw for Black. (e) The above game was played in Ihe Glasgow League, between K. Scobbie (Black) and John Campbell (While). — Hamilton ‘ Advertiser.’
