SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS
MITCHELL RETAINS TITLE [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, August 28. _ Perfect weather was again experienced ,for the second day of the New Zealand amateur ski championships at Mount Ruapehu to-day, and the long distance' and slalom events were decided under good snow conditions. A great improvement has taken place recently in the slalom as in other branches of ski-ing in New Zealand. At the last championship held at Ruapehu in 1932 only one or two competitors apart from T. W. Mitchell, the Australian champion, covered the course with any degree of certainty. On the present occasion at least ten men completed both descents of the course in good tjme, and with complete control. Mitchell completed his two runs without a fall at astonishing speed. His margin of victory, however, was not nearly as great as in 1932.
In the women’s slalom, Mrs A. B. Edwardes, last year’s winner, retained her title by a small margin. Results;—
