—Vice-Regal.— His Excellency the Governor-General (Lord Bledisloe) will visit Christchurch for Carnival Week. He will arrive on the morning of August 10, and on .ho evening of the following day he dl perform the opening: ceremony of ;o Winter Show and Exhibition. His xcellency will remain in Ohristchi -h until August 20, during which time e will fulfil a number of enyayemetrs, most of which have not yet been definitely arranged. The vice-regal party will proceed to Dunedin after leaving Christchurch, and will spend three days here before returning to» Wellington. It is not yet known whether this will' bo > Lord Bledisloe’s last visit to Dunedin before he leaves New Zealand.

Mr J. L. Saunders, director, of dental hygiene, brought his Dunedin visit to a close this morning and left for Wellington.

Lady Sidey, Mrs Joseph M'George, and. Mrs Donald Reid left this morning for Wellington on Plunket Society business.

At yesterday’s meeting of the Taieri Countv Council a welcome was extended to Cr William Nichol, who was elected to fill the vacancy on. the Outram Riding caused by the death of Mr James W. Blair! , Mr A. E. Ford, manager of the Auckland Transport Board for the past twelve years, will leave for England nest month. Ho expects to investigate the latest transport development. Mr R. H\ Bartley, manager of the Auckland Power Board. will also leave next month for England to investigate electrical power development. The funeral of the late Father O’Connell. which was preceded by Requiem Mass, was very largely attended.: all sections of the community being represented:' O’Shea conducted the service at the graveside. Thirty priests- from various parts of the dominion attended the funeral.—Nelson Press Association.

At the monthly meeting of the Taieri Countv Council, yesterday fitting tribute to the memory of Cr J. W. Blair, who had represented the Outram Riding- on the council from 1905 until tV© time of his death, was paid by the chairman (Cr C. Findlay), who said that thev_ all. recognised Mr Blairis great ability and wide knowledge of local body law and procedure, and his business training had been of great benefit to the council in its deliberations. His forceful speech and s A ' , " , 'g personality had helped in no small measure to carry through to a successful issue many of the reading works and other amenities now possessed by Taieri ratepayers. -During his twentynine years’ term of office as a councillor Cr Blair had’ filled the position ’of chairman at intervals'over,a period of nine -years with unquestioned imparand with credit to the council and himself. Other speakers endorsed the chairman's remarks, and a motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried.
