UNDER WATER MANOEUVRES
A submarine fitted with a directionfinder enabling it to ho guided under water by radio from its laud base to air enemy port is being tested, by .the Admiralty, (says aU English paper). Direction-finders tire already fitted on hoard some surface ships, but it hap taken mouths of research by. the Admiralty and the Marconi Company to develop them for submarines. Every submarine cruising under water has to rely entirely oh compass readings. Now the navigating officer will pe able to take his bearings.from a land base or surface vessel, even wjieis travelling thirty-five feet under water'; “This will mean that flotijlas of submarines could creep into enemy ports without coming to the surface for tbeit ’bearings,” an official of the Marconi Company said to a ‘ Sunday Express ’ representative. ■ . “ ft also means that if a submarine runs aground she will be able to guide i-oscne ships to her exact position.”
